Lily’s Light: Kites for a Cure® will host its third annual family kite-flying event at the hill in Tropical Park in West Dade from 12 noon to 3 p.m. on Sat., Nov. 5. The event honors Lily Plaza, a non-smoker who lost her battle with lung cancer in January 2008, at the age of 61.
With a donation of $25 per kite flyer ($30 on event day), participants can make a difference in the fight against lung cancer and bring greater lung cancer awareness to the South Florida area. With their donation, participants will receive their own kite to decorate, an event T-shirt and giveaways and enjoy a fun-filled family afternoon with food and music. Proceeds from the kite fly will benefit Uniting Against Lung Cancer, a foundation that funds research about the disease.
“Over the last two years we’ve raised over $47,000, which allowed us to co-fund our first lung cancer research grant in memory of my mom," said Anna Plaza, daughter of Lily Plaza and founder of Lily’s Light. "This year we are continuing our battle against lung cancer and striving to fund another grant so we grow another step closer to finding a cure.
Plaza added: "One out of four women succumbs to lung cancer each year; and in 1987, lung cancer surpassed breast cancer as the #1 cancer killer of women. It is a battle I will continue to fight in my mom’s memory and for all those who are living with or have died from lung cancer.”
This year, more than 200,000 families in America will face a lung cancer diagnosis. To combat this insidious disease, Lily’s Light in collaboration with Uniting Against Lung Cancer is funding innovative research into the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. Thanks to families and friends of lung cancer patients who have made a financial investment in our mission, the foundation is making a difference. In only eight years of funding, Uniting Against Lung Cancer has awarded over $9 million in research grants across the country. Together we are funding research to find a cure.
